Nicholas Sironka at People to People

Last week I was shooting some images for People to People. Just a few days before the shoot, my assistant called me up and said that he wasn’t going to make it because something came up. For a photographer to hear this, it kind of makes your heart jump, and then you start running through your head how the day will turn out. I knew that I could do it on my own because I have worked without an assistant several times before, but I knew that I really would like someone to help carry in gear and stand in for the test shots. I started calling around and it seemed like everyone was busy. Then a friend from Kenya, Nicholas Sironka (a.k.a Sironka), called me up and asked what I was up to. To make a long story shorter, he helped me out and here is a test photo in color and black and white. Thanks for helping, Sironka!!!

Gonzaga Climbing Classes @ Wild Walls

I have been working on shooting images for Wild Walls’ new website. Last week, they asked if I would shoot an image for a poster for the climbing class for next year, and I agreed. I always get excited to shoot climbing photos. Todd Mires, Phil Sanders, and myself came up with the idea to make a image that was shot from above, looking down on the model’s hand, and letting the rest of the image fall off (go out of focus). I want to “Thank” Taylor Moravec and Javier Sparks for stepping up and being great models.

Birdhouse Squirrel Recordings

Last night I started a project shooting images for Birdhouse Squirrel Recordings, which is a full service recording studio located in Spokane Valley, WA. After have a beer with one of the owners, Chris Tanaka Canwel. We decide to shoot some close ups images of his gear for his website. Here are some of the images that we came up with and even a portrait of Chris, cheers.

PARKADE

This is a photo of the Parkade in downtown Spokane, Washington. It has to be my favorite buildings in Spokane. It was built for $3.5 million in 1967 by the Sceva Construction Company, and the architect for the project was Warren C. Heylman. Warren was presented an award for ‘excellence in use of concrete’ in 1968.

This is a fun portrait of my friend Devin Beedle in his basement. He wanted a photo of himself wearing his grandfather’s hat and really didn’t want the regular style of portrait. We came up with some other props and started to playing around with ideas. We have a story line for this photo but I thought it might be fun to see what stories you would would come up with for it.

“This is a portrait of Jeremy Utley”. He is a Spokane Garland district local. You might have seen himaround Garland pubs or at Porters Barber Shop. He is a old punk rocker and collects old bicycles. Jeremy also has another awesome hobby, refurbishing motorcycles or customizing older bikes. Maybe You might get the chance to meet him. If you do, it is well worth it!

Mountain Biking wtih Derrick Fernandez

Last week, I decided that I should really shed the rest of my winter insulation, and my good friend, Derrick Fernandez, called me up and asked if I would like to go for a ride. I said sure, and I think I really shocked him because he has been asking me to ride for the last three months now. A hour later, I meet up with him. My bike has been keeping my another friend’s garage company for a year now, and, with a little tune up, I was on my mountain bike for a 22 mile ride. It wasn’t the smoothest ride for me, it was actually one of the worst rides I’ve been on in awhile, but Derrick kept me going. Within that week I rode 75 mile with Derrick, and every time it got easier and remembered how much I like riding. Thanks Derrick!!!!!

Mercy Brown @ the Knitting Factory in Spokane

I was ask to shoot some photos of Spokane’s own metal band, Mercy Brown, at the Knitting Factory in Spokane, Washington. If metal is something you enjoy, then this is the band you definitely need to check out.

There one obstacle I had to get through. I could not use any flash at all. There was video being shot through out the show. I knew that I would have to cope with the stage lights and there would be a little blur in the images, so I just had fun with it.

Train ride home from North Dakota

On the train ride home from North Dakota, it was a very overcast day, so there wasn’t much going on outside the windows. Once in awhile, the sun would peak out from the clouds and I would start shooting. I spent most of my time talking to people that were in the observation cart. This is where I captured the photos of Valodia and his daughter, Nova. I really enjoyed my train ride back. Thank you to the people that let me be apart of their lives, I know that I will remember you!

Capital Hill Seattle Bench

I was watching a friendly game of Beer-in-Hand Kickball up on Capital Hill in Seattle and saw this guy sitting on the bench, watching the game, too. I knew it, it was one of the moments that you see and wished you had your camera. Luckily, my camera was not far from me.

There are two versions of this photo. I could not decide if I liked it in color or black and white.
